This Diabetes Web Site is For You

By Matt Nilsen

Recently I was talking with someone who was searching for information because she was confronting prediabetes, in spite of an aggressive exercise regimen. She asked me about strategies she should employ and wanted to know if she could beat diabetes. I told her she should be working closely with her doctor to develop strategies for her specific form of diabetes. It may be time for her to start an antidiabetes medication like metformin. I also said that if she develops diabetes, she should not postpone starting insulin early. It is likely to help her pancreas stay viable longer.

After the conversation I realized how passionate I am about encouraging people to aggressively manage diabetes. There are no guarantees, but people who take responsibility for diabetes care can completely avoid complications, or at least delay them. It takes vision for people to take antidiabetes medications, eat right, and exercise if they are pre-diabetic or recently diagnosed with diabetes. It takes some boldness, and perhaps some sacrifice, to do more blood sugar testing to even out the highs and lows. That same vision and boldness helps some people with type 2 diabetes decide to start insulin early in order to achieve ideal A1C scores.

Nevertheless, a large proportion of diabetics do not own and manage the disease well enough.  Many people with diabetes are missing out on valuable treatments. They are not using the proper medications, checking their blood glucose, exercising, eating better, or considering the benefits of insulin. Life is busy, money is tight, and we have a lot to worry about. I know how that goes. I have been choosing not to exercise as much as I should lately, and my recent blood work reflects that. (But I am taking credit for dramatically improving my LDL cholesterol.)

If you need to get back on the wagon, I hope you find encouragement here. If you are trying to learn about how to get an edge on diabetes, this is the web site for you. My Diabetes Information can help you you want to:

  • Go to your doctor ready to understand diabetes and how your case is unique.
  • If you want to be aggressive about getting your A1C score below 6.5%.
  • Avoiding heart disease, amputations, eye disease, and kidney dialysis.

However, I hope you will focus on more than avoiding complications and diseases. I hope you will focus on enjoying more movies, golf, fishing, tennis, travel, family, or whatever it is you love in the decades to come.
