Intensive Insulin Therapy Patients Beating Neuropathy
A follow-up study appearing in the February volume of Diabetes Care showed that diabetics who participated in intensive diabetes care experienced a lower occurrence of diabetic neuropathy than a control group that practiced conventional diabetes therapy. According to the study, intensive diabetes care is three or more insulin injections per day, versus two or less injections in conventional care.
Patients who received intensive therapy were 64 percent (from the first measure more than seven years ago) and 45 percent (from the recent follow-up measure) less likely to have symptoms and signs, respectively, of neuropathy compared with those who received conventional therapy. This benefit persisted for at least 8 years after the end of treatment.
