Exercise with Diabetes is Great if You Prepare for It
- by Matt Nilsen
Exercise is so important to people living with diabetes. However, it is not a good idea to run out and start exercising without some coaching from your physician or diabetes educator. People with diabetes could use all their insulin processing the glucose that muscles need to sustain the pace of exercise. If that happens, they may find themselves on the uncomfortable or dangerous side of hypoglycemia.
Your exercise preparation and activities depend on whether you are a type 1 or type 2 diabetic, as well as a number of other factors. In preparation for exercise, you need to have the right types and amounts of food in your system. You should also dose insulin correctly if you are insulin dependent, and you should have the right amount of water on hand. Again, health care professionals can help you adjust to your needs. However, there are some fantastic Web sites in the world of diabetes that have already written some valuable information.
