Diabetes and Male Fertility
Researchers have identified yet another complication of type 1 diabetes—male impotence and fertility issues.
Experts have known for years about the relationship between diabetes and male impotence. This is a serious problem for normal, active adults. With the advent of such products as Viagra™, Cialis™ and others, men can overcome this complication.
In the past, doctors did believe diabetes had significant impact on male fertility. However, a study presented July 2008 at the 24th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology describes evidence to the contrary.
Under a microscopic examination, the sperm of type 1 diabetics appeared relatively normal with the same motility (movement) as non-diabetic men. However, when the genetic blueprint (DNA) was studied, there was significant damage in the diabetic sperm.
The quality of sperm DNA is directly related to poor embryo quality, higher miscarriage rates, and lower implantation rates, as well as leading to some childhood cancers and illnesses. No one is sure of why, or how to resolve it. One thought of intervention is through the use of dietary supplements, although none appear to be identified yet.
As with all studies, the findings raise further questions. Until researchers can validate the cause and identify resolution, diabetics will have to be patient. If you are in your reproductive years, speak to your doctor and ask about genetic counseling to allay any concerns.
Corie Richter is a nurse and physician's assistant who started her career as a health educator. The survivor of a myocardial infarction (heart attack) and partially successful quadruple bypass surgery, she did not let her health challenges hamper her. Neither the limitations of spinal surgery nor of diabetes have deterred her from a mission of service. She now encourages others through writing and speaking engagements to master their disabilities through education and a proactive attitude.
